We spent four winter days at Emily Moon and loved our Luxury Garden Suite. It was very spacious and beautifully decorated, with its own deck for watching the sun go down over the Bitou river, plus a gorgeous outdoor shower. The place has a soulful, distinctive rustic African charm. Everyone on the staff was friendly, professional, and helpful. We enjoyed all our meals, both at Simon's Bar and in the restaurant. Thank you, Team Emily Moon 🙏

We chose Emily Moon for our wedding because of its beauty, atmosphere, and our long personal connection to Plettenberg Bay. The location is exquisite, the bohemian look is magical, and the venue itself felt special. The food exceeded our expectations. The coordination and service, though, fell short for a venue at this price and level. Communication before the wedding was difficult, and on the day we felt caught off guard by unclear expectations and a lack of guidance. Coordinators were included in the package, but we often felt unsupported with logistics. Some small service touches were missing, and several guests mentioned inconsistent drink service even though there was plenty available. Requests as simple as champagne glasses for the bridesmaids seemed to be treated as a major inconvenience. The getting-ready rooms hadn’t been serviced, so we had to clean them ourselves, and staff were often curt and unwelcoming. The rooms also didn’t meet the standard we expected for the price. Rates felt pitched at an international luxury safari lodge level, without the same service, inclusions, or attention to detail to justify them. Emily Moon has the ingredients to be exceptional, but service and value define the experience. Future couples should be very clear about what is covered and whether the price fits the service provided.

Our wedding at Emily Moon on 09 May 2026 was everything we hoped for, even with the heavy floods. Hélouise and her team made the whole weekend feel blissful, from planning through arrival and checkout. The staff were incredibly helpful and lovely to deal with, though I wish we could remember their names. Friday’s get-together with our guests at Simon's bar was so much fun and a perfect start to the weekend. Alex made sure the wedding dinner ran smoothly, and we heard so many compliments about the food, especially the delicious calamari and perfect fillets. As bride and groom, we’re so happy we chose Emily Moon. We could relax and enjoy the wedding, knowing the dedicated staff had things running smoothly and wanted the best for our weekend. Thank you for helping us make the best memories.

The view over the winding river valley is beautiful, and the room looked amazing at first, with lovely design details. But the balcony door stuck at the bottom and was so hard to open it needed a kick. There was also a strong paint smell. We stayed two nights at the end of a three-week holiday. The restaurant was very busy when we ate there; the food was good, but didn’t wow us. Staff seemed not to listen properly, and they got our breakfast orders wrong more than once. On Friday night, noise from the restaurant and bar carried into the room, with the place seeming popular with locals. We stayed at other Garden Route properties in a similar price range and felt this one was overpriced by comparison.

Dinner was the highlight: beautifully presented food, excellent service, and a memorable fine dining experience. Breakfast, by contrast, was disappointing and nowhere near the standard of the previous evening. Emily Moon River Lodge has been on my bucket list for years, and we finally visited during a golfing trip to the Plettenberg Bay area. We arrived in a heavy storm and cold front sweeping over the Garden Route, which made for a dramatic first impression. The lodge is certainly unusual. Its eclectic decor and layout felt more like an artistic farm lodge retreat than the luxurious boutique hotel the website might lead you to expect. Some people may find that charming and adventurous; others may notice the gap between expectation and reality. For me, it’s a place for open-minded travellers who value character, atmosphere, and experience over polished luxury or traditional value for money. The setting is beautiful, but at this price point the stay left us thinking about how persuasive photography and marketing can be.
