The room itself had several basic problems. The couch was dirty and its cushion covers didn’t match, the kettle leaked badly, and there was only one hand towel for the two of us. We also arrived without slippers or a vanity set, and there was no terrestrial TV on the first night. On our first afternoon, deliveries and staff activity by the service entrance made it hard to rest. We had booked and prepaid four months ahead for a luxury garden-view room at £350, around ZAR8,000, a night. An email had said we’d secured the best available rate. Instead, we were given Room R8, which seemed among the least desirable rooms on the property. Most of the others appeared to have sea, mountain, or partial sea views. A hedge blocked the view from ours, and its balcony looked onto a small parking area, a delivery zone, and the kitchen staff entrance. Reception said the hotel was fully booked and couldn’t offer us another room. That was surprising, since the website showed a larger room with a better outlook available for less. The reception staff were polite and tried to help, but offered only an inexpensive bottle of sparkling wine or a “romantic turndown.” Neither addressed the problem. The duty manager said he’d come back with a proposal, but never did, and wasn’t available when we checked out. We asked management for a ZAR3,000 partial refund to bring the price in line with what we actually received. They didn’t respond. We’re now pursuing the matter under the South African Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008. At the hotel’s five-star luxury price and positioning, we expected what the website descriptions and photos led us to expect. The stay fell short of that standard.

The staff were really friendly, and we enjoyed the restaurant food. Those were the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing two-night stay at Robberg Beach Lodge during our holiday in South Africa. We’d expected a relaxing five-star getaway, but the hotel felt outdated and didn’t look as good as its photos. The room was fairly average, without the ocean view we’d expected. Our room had an old TV, and only about half the channels worked. There was no YouTube, casting, or Netflix option. It hadn’t been cleaned properly either: the shower shampoo bottle had been put back empty, and we found hairs from the previous guest. There were also a few small animals inside, including a little lizard, ants, and a woodlouse 🦎🐜. Both swimming pools were quite small. One was very exposed beside reception and the restaurant, so it felt uncomfortable. At the other pool, you couldn’t order drinks. For a three-star hotel, this could be a nice place. It just doesn’t live up to a five-star standard 😕👍

The location is amazing, and the waiters were polite and attentive. The food was good quality and good value, especially the soup of the day. Phila made both our visits particularly enjoyable. She was accommodating with allergies and dietary needs in our group, and offered vegetarian alternatives when we asked.

We were very happy with our choice for three nights in Dec 2025. My husband, our two children and I found the staff friendly and helpful, the rooms very clean, and the breakfast really good. The location is brilliant, right across from the beach.

We paid an extremely high price for what was sold as five-star accommodation, but it felt more like an average three-star hotel. To me, that’s false advertising. The manager offered only empty apologies and no remedy. The cleanliness was awful. There were hairs, sand, and dirt on the filthy floors, blood stains on the bedding, and underpants from previous occupants beneath the bed. It clearly hadn’t been cleaned under there. The hotel is an old renovated small house, and restaurant noise could be heard in the bedroom.
