We chose Tshukudu Bush Lodge for our anniversary because its hilltop setting in the heart of Pilanesberg National Park and 20-guest limit promised the intimate stay we wanted. We booked in March 2025 for March 2026, then arranged flights and a rental car after the confirmation came through. In late November, just over three months before the trip, we were told by email that unforeseen circumstances meant they could no longer host us. The suggested replacement was Bakubung Bush Lodge, another Legacy Hotels property with around 100 rooms and space for roughly 200 guests. That’s a very different kind of stay from the exclusive lodge we had booked. When I called, I was told Tshukudu would be closed for extensive renovations from January 11 to May 31, 2026, which covers our whole booking. A closure planned for several months is hard to believe was decided only recently, yet we heard about it after holding a confirmed reservation since March 2025. We’re now scrambling to find a comparable place and dealing with non-refundable travel costs. The cancellation has taken the excitement out of our anniversary and left us frustrated and disappointed. For a high-end Legacy Hotels lodge, the communication and treatment of a confirmed booking felt deeply unprofessional and uncaring. I can’t rely on Tshukudu to honor a reservation, and would recommend choosing somewhere more dependable in the park.

We’ll be back! The game drives were a real highlight, and Jafari was a fantastic guide, so knowledgeable. He helped us see the Big Five and loads of other animals. The lodge itself was incredible, and the food was exceptional. It felt like a dream.

Come for the wildlife, and Jann-Rick’s experience and anecdotes make the game drives even better. We saw an amazing range of animals at close range, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and antelope. The early starts are relentless, though: you’re up at 5am, and the mornings are chilly, so bring warm layers. The lodge sits in the middle of the national park, and the view over the plain changes all the time. At dawn, you can watch wildlife moving below. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. There’s no air-con, but that was fine in August, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Meals are excellent, with four a day and a five-course dinner. I’d say 4 to 5 nights is about right to make the most of it.

One thing to know before you book: the bathroom doesn’t offer much privacy. The toilet has a door, but the bathroom and bedroom share an open ceiling. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay. The balcony had a beautiful, relaxing view, the staff were lovely and the service was top notch. JR led great game drives and is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about animals and nature. We liked the food too, which we’d been a little worried about. To us, this is the best choice in the park. There are 130+ steps to reach the room. After 3-4h sitting in the car for game drives, though, they make a decent stretch.

Living right in the bush inside Pilanesberg National Park made this a spectacular stay, full of memories we’ll keep for a lifetime. We’d book again in a heartbeat. Three people in particular made it magical. Simon, the Assistant Manager, handled every request without fuss and went above and beyond for our wedding service. He even made sure we had an amazing game drive afterward. We loved when you switched off the engine so we could hear the animals, and the scenic stops where we laughed at the hippos. JR’s knowledge and passion for wildlife were admirable. We felt lucky to have him as our field guide. There were plenty of hilarious moments, and we loved that you respected the animals by avoiding chases and overcrowded spots. Thank you for all the beautiful memories. And Simon, our waiter, the service you gave us was the best we’ve ever had. You made us feel like royalty and like old friends at once. You’re a real credit to Tshukudu lodge, and we’re so grateful for your hospitality. You truly are a diamond. A few practical bits: I’m vegetarian and had no trouble with the food. The chefs provided a delicious variety. There are lots of stairs, but I think that adds to the remote feel. Take your time and wear suitable shoes. The game-drive jeeps are comfortable and luxurious, with blankets and ponchos if you get cold. I’d bring a windproof jacket, a light scarf for the dust at night, and trousers for the evening. Please listen to your field guide on drives. They know what they’re doing and are looking out for the animals’ welfare. If they ask you to stay still, turn off your camera flash, or keep quiet, respect that. They’re trying to keep you safe and make the experience special. And about the internet: you’re in the bush, so expect it to be slower than at a city hotel. You’ll have internet, but the point is to immerse yourself in the wildlife. We even managed to watch a few documentaries on the iPad in bed at night without any trouble. Thanks to everyone for a magnificent stay. We’ll be back. Be ready for a fabulous time 🥰💖
