Sandpiper Guest House

Sandpiper Guesthouse makes a comfortable, charming base for exploring St Lucia and iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The welcome is warm, the rooms are thoughtfully designed for relaxation and convenience, and the garden and pool are peaceful places to unwind. From here, the village is a short distance away, and you can head out for a safari or boat cruise, or enjoy the coast and this World Heritage Site. The garden is well kept and looks out onto a lovely forest view. There are two pools, several spots to relax, and a small library. We also liked the honesty bar, with a good range of local wines and domestic beers. The staff were very friendly, breakfast was delicious, and there’s a small restaurant service in the evening. We had a great time here.

The place was spotlessly clean and the food was lovely. We even got to see different animals walking past the garden. The staff were so kind and helpful with bookings and trips, and gave us plenty of tips on where to spot lions and leopards, complete with detailed maps. When our pool was being cleaned, they arranged for us to use the pool at a nearby hotel for free. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in town.

I loved the shower, and there were some nice extras: an honesty bar, a book boat, and friendly staff. The host was helpful with recommendations and showed us the two dining areas, explaining that breakfast, lunch, and dinner were available. Breakfast was included, and both pools looked inviting. The room was a letdown, though. It was small, faced the parking area, had no patio, and didn’t have the great view I expected from the online photos. The internet also wasn’t high speed as stated. We’d paid for three nights and stayed, but I felt we’d been given the worst room. On arrival, I’d already found the reception furniture old-fashioned. Parking was frustrating too, since there were no assigned spaces and we sometimes found someone else in the spot we’d used. Numbering the spaces to match the rooms would save guests from feeling like they’re at a busy mall.
