Karen found room for us at short notice when we needed an overnight stop. At DeKotzenhof Guest House in the quaint town of Wakkerstroom, we slept comfortably and took a short walk to the hotel for a delicious dinner. I’d happily recommend staying here.

We spent four nights in the self-catering cottage in November 2025, using it as a base for hiking and birding nearby. Mark and Karen made us feel at home, and the evening meals and breakfasts they cooked were superb. A pair of red-throated wrynecks came into view while we were sitting on the veranda. The weather wasn’t great, so I’m sure there was more to see.

The room and bathroom were spacious, and it felt like a very safe town. From where we parked, it was about 50 m on foot to the shops and mini market, if it’s open. Mark and Karen were great hosts, thank you.

Mark and Karen were lovely hosts during our stay at Dekotzenhof in Wakkerstroom. We especially loved Mark’s cooking, absolutely divine and well worth trying. A fantastic place to relax and go birding!

After a particularly stressful Saturday, I decided at the last minute to stay over on Sunday. The peaceful country town was just what I needed. I could wander through the beautiful, well-kept garden, sit and relax on the verandah, and explore the shops on foot since De Kotzenhof is right in the heart of town. My cosy, lovely room had no TV, but I didn’t need one. Karen and Mark were warm, welcoming hosts, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Highly recommend.
