I’ve stayed here almost every weekend for two years, and it’s been upsetting to watch the standards fall since the staff changed. This latest visit was especially bad. I found a cockroach in my room, mould on the pillows and blood on the blanket. The room phone was broken, and nobody acted on my report. At breakfast, dead ants came out of a sugar packet on the table when I opened it for my cappuccino. The WiFi was very weak and unreliable, and the TVs are outdated. For somewhere that calls itself a 4-star hotel, the service and condition felt like 1-star at best. I’m a loyal guest, so I expected much better. This stay changed how I see the place, and I hope management takes these hygiene and service issues seriously. I took photos of everything in case they’re needed.

I ended up going to a restaurant and paying for breakfast instead. The food here was that bad: dried-out sausage, a dirty grill where they cook the eggs, and the same menu every morning. Complaining didn’t change anything. I once had two people visit and paid an extra R500 for them, which I didn’t mind, but all they could eat was a slice of toast and a cup of coffee. That’s how terrible the food was.

The spa treatments were incredible, and the therapists were warm, professional and amazing. Inside the spa, the atmosphere felt peaceful and luxurious. But the first morning, at 5AM, security banged aggressively on my door and physically tried to open it. I woke up terrified and confused, half asleep and wondering who was trying to get into my room. At the front desk, I was casually told, “this happens if rooms are vacant.” I was clearly checked in, so that answer made things worse. After that, I never slept properly during my two-night stay. Every noise made me anxious, and I felt on edge instead of safe or relaxed. Sleep is part of a spa retreat, and the whole point was lost when I couldn’t feel at ease in my room. It’s a shame, because the spa and staff deserve praise, but guest safety is everything. Would I come back for treatments? Maybe. Stay overnight again? Im Uncertain. What should’ve been a peaceful getaway became a stressful experience I won’t forget.

The spa and facilities seemed poorly maintained, and the rooms, including the equipment in them, felt dated. We didn’t think the experience justified the price. There’s a lot of potential here, though. Better management processes, refreshed marketing, and upgraded equipment and entertainment options would help. Good morning, and thank you for acknowledging our feedback.

The food choice on site is limited, though the restaurants that are there served genuinely good meals. It’s also a family-friendly place, which works well for a quiet break with kids. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with what you need for a peaceful stay, even if the accommodation feels old-fashioned. Mine was non-smoking. The natural hot pools were the highlight: each one gets warmer as you go higher, so it’s easy to find a temperature that suits you. Caledon Spa & Hot Springs has a calming, distinctive setup.
