After the awful treatment we received from staff at the Royal Hotel, we looked for somewhere peaceful and came across the old jail. We had a great stay there. The rooms are beautiful, the food is good, and the staff were always friendly, helpful, and smiling.

We had a rough night after getting food poisoning from something we'd eaten on the road the previous day, so we couldn't enjoy breakfast much. The staff kindly offered simple food to suit us. Karen gave us a very warm welcome, and the Donkey Stable was cosy on a cold, wet evening, with hot showers and everything we needed. The next morning, staff were helpful when we found a puncture just before leaving. Breakfast was beautifully set out in the Old Jail itself. All in all, a caring and welcoming stay.

The owners are friendly and have restored this special place with care and wonderful attention to detail. Each former 'cell' is a tastefully decorated room with its own bathroom and private courtyard.

Karen and Oleg have done a beautiful job renovating the Old Jail. It's worth visiting for a night or longer, whether to take in the Karoo and Baviaanskloof surroundings. They're right, you won't want to escape from this place. Highly recommended.

Such a peaceful, quiet place to relax, and a really beautiful stay. This guesthouse is so unique, with an interesting history and lots of thoughtful details. I'd absolutely recommend it to everyone.
