We only needed a room from 7 PM to 3 AM so we could work, but there was no electricity, Wi-Fi, or backup inverter. We paid K850, and even had to spend K30 on a cup of milk because there was no milk or coffee in the room, despite there being a kettle. The only Wi-Fi was at the restaurant, where I was working on my laptop. At 9 PM, two hours after we arrived, the power went out and the place went completely dark. The Wi-Fi stopped too, and there was no light in our room, so I couldn’t keep working. I had to use my phone torch to walk back from the restaurant, past animals roaming freely that became aggressive around the flashlight. Load shedding shouldn’t be an excuse for having no backup. We were very disappointed, especially since our first visit to Chita last year was good.

The rooms were clean and had enough furnishings, and the location works well for a stopover. The place is unfortunately very run down. Food was below average, with a very limited menu. Staff were keen and helpful, which says something about the management.

It’s a lovely spot to relax, with welcoming staff and good food. Service does get a little slow sometimes.

The boat cruise was awesome, and I enjoyed the food. The surroundings could use a bit of work, though, and I had to wait a while for the kitchen service.

The Kafue River is what stayed with me most. Sitting beside it, it’s easy to feel wrapped up in a story that doesn’t need words, while the nights settle in peacefully with lantern light and distant laughter. Chita Lodge in Kafue has a way of becoming part of your memory, and somehow it feels as though it remembers you too. Everything has a nostalgic simplicity. The gardens seem cared for with real love, and the wooden decks creak softly as you walk across them. The staff have that familiar warmth that makes you feel like you’ve reconnected with an old friend. Time seems to slow down here. You can still hear laughter from the poolside after sunset, with the quiet hum of nature all around. It feels less like an ordinary getaway and more like a gentle rewind.
