Nicosia city guide
Where to stay in Nicosia
Compare five Nicosia bases, from Ledra and courtyard neighbourhoods to the modern centre and museum edge, with a separately assessed northern old-city option.

Plan your visit
Nicosia needs two decisions: the setting you want outside your hotel and the side of the Green Line on which your plans take place. Ledra and Laiki Geitonia suit a southern first visit, the eastern old city suits courtyard streets and cultural stops, and the modern centre suits mixed leisure and work. The western museum edge is another real alternative. A northern walled-city stay has its own appeal, but crossing and entry requirements are part of choosing it, not an afterthought.
Choose your base
Choose Ledra/Laiki Geitonia for southern old-city sights, Chrysaliniotissa for smaller cultural streets, Makariou/Stasikratous for shopping and appointments, and the Agios Andreas museum edge for antiquities and gardens. Choose the northern walled city only after checking entry, crossing and insurance arrangements for your trip.
Solomou Square is the urban-bus interchange, while the Kapnos airport shuttle uses a separate station on Kyrenias Avenue. Plan the onward journey to the hotel from the correct arrival point, especially when the last approach lies within pedestrian streets.
Ledra Street and Laiki Geitonia: a first visit focused on the southern old city

The southern old-city streets around Ledra, Onasagorou and Laiki Geitonia make the strongest starting point for a short Nicosia visit. The Leventis Municipal Museum and Shacolas Tower sit in this walkable cluster, with Faneromeni's square farther into the lanes. Cafes, tavernas and small shops give you places to stop without leaving the historic setting. Choose this base when your main plans are south of the Green Line and you want a room close enough to return to between museums and dinner.
Solomou Square is the useful Cyprus Public Transport interchange outside the walls, but an airport arrival with Kapnos ends at its separate Kyrenias Avenue station, not in these pedestrian lanes. Plan that onward leg and ask where the hotel can receive luggage. The compromise is activity around restaurant streets and historic buildings whose access and room layouts vary. The Ledra crossing is a controlled pedestrian crossing, not a normal street shortcut. Choose the modern centre for business appointments and shopping, or the museum edge for a less restaurant-centred doorstep.
Plan it well: The pin and photograph identify the Leventis Museum in Laiki Geitonia, not the Ledra checkpoint or a hotel.
Nicosia tourism: southern old-city sightsChrysaliniotissa and the eastern walled city: courtyard streets, crafts and cultural visits

Chrysaliniotissa is a real eastern old-city quarter, useful when you want historic houses and smaller cultural stops rather than the busiest shopping lanes. The neighbourhood's courtyard buildings, workshops and cafes give it a different appeal from Ledra Street. Broaden the local walk towards Ermou Street's Centre of Visual Arts and Research, the Archbishopric area and Famagusta Gate at the eastern walls. This is a good fit for travellers who want the city's cultural texture to fill the spaces between museum visits, particularly on a longer stay.
Cyprus Public Transport's network map and Pame planner are useful for checking the eastern address; do not assume a room inside the walls is beside Solomou Square. An airport shuttle still needs an onward transfer from Kyrenias Avenue, with the final vehicle approach checked against the narrow street. The downside is a thinner accommodation choice and less immediate access to the main interchange than around the southern old-city entrance. Ledra/Laiki Geitonia is the simpler first-visit compromise; the modern centre is better when new-city appointments will repeat.
Plan it well: Famagusta Gate is the photographed and mapped eastern-wall anchor for this broader base, not Chrysaliniotissa's church or a neighbourhood boundary.
Nicosia tourism: Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhoodMakariou and Stasikratous: shopping, dining and central appointments

Choose the new-city streets south of the walls when shops, dining and central appointments matter as much as the historic lanes. Makariou Avenue and Stasikratous provide the main address references, with Eleftheria Square linking this setting back into the old city. The A G Leventis Gallery adds an art visit outside the walls, and cafes around the commercial streets make it possible to plan an evening locally. This base suits a mixed leisure-and-business trip better than a hotel chosen solely for views of the Venetian walls.
The southern central location does not make the airport shuttle a doorstep service: Kapnos uses Kyrenias Avenue, so compare the onward road or Cyprus Public Transport connection to the exact hotel. Solomou Square is a useful city-bus reference towards the walls, while more southerly addresses may favour another stop shown in Pame. Traffic and a less historic immediate setting are the main compromises. Stay around Laiki Geitonia for a short museum-and-lanes weekend, or near the western museum edge if garden walks are the stronger priority.
Plan it well: Eleftheria Square is the map and photo anchor at the old/new-city threshold, not Stasikratous Street itself.
Nicosia Municipality: Stasikratous StreetAgios Andreas and the Cyprus Museum edge: antiquities, gardens and a less shopping-led stay

The western museum edge offers a practical alternative to the southern restaurant lanes. The Cyprus Museum is the main cultural anchor, while the municipal gardens and the Agios Andreas setting extend the day beyond an indoor collection. A museum cafe break and a walk towards Paphos Gate make more sense here than using the hotel only as a place to sleep between old-city outings. Choose an address close to the museum side when you want both the antiquities collection and reasonable access back towards the historic centre.
Use Cyprus Public Transport's current map to check the stop for the exact address; the broader western district is not all within the same short walk of Solomou Square. Kapnos airport arrivals still require the onward journey from Kyrenias Avenue. This is not a dense hotel-and-nightlife hub, so verify local dining around the property rather than expect the choices of Onasagorou outside the door. For repeated shopping or office visits, the modern centre is better; for evenings entirely in the pedestrian lanes, Laiki Geitonia reduces the daily back-and-forth.
Plan it well: The pin and photograph show the Cyprus Museum on the eastern edge of this western base, not all of Agios Andreas.
Visit Cyprus: Cyprus MuseumNorthern walled city: crossing-aware Ottoman heritage stays

A northern walled-city stay is a distinct, entry-conditional option, not another unrestricted part of the southern hotel area. Around Buyuk Han, the Arasta streets and Selimiye Mosque, the emphasis is on Ottoman courtyard architecture, craft shops and coffee or meals in the old-city setting. Choose it when those northern streets are a main reason for the trip and you have checked the arrangements for your passport and arrival route. The area merits its own comparison instead of being presented as an automatic bargain across the checkpoint.
Ledra/Lokmaci is pedestrian-only, so a southern taxi or hotel transfer cannot simply drive you through it. A Kapnos arrival at Kyrenias Avenue requires an onward southern journey, the crossing and a separate final approach; the southern Cyprus Public Transport map does not establish a through-service to northern hotels. The FCDO warns that entering the Republic through the north, including Ercan, can create legal-entry problems, and British consular support in the north is limited. Check your own government's advice and insurance. A southern base is the clearer choice when most appointments or airport logistics are south of the line.
Plan it well: Advisory / entry-conditional base. The pin and photograph identify Buyuk Han, not a checkpoint. Verify crossing documents and your lawful arrival route before booking.

The airport shuttle does not end in the old city
Kapnos lists its Nicosia station on Kyrenias Avenue for the Larnaca Airport service. Arrange or plan the onward journey to your hotel separately, especially with luggage or an arrival outside useful urban-bus connections.

Cyprus Public Transport publishes the Nicosia urban map, including Solomou Square and western and eastern city connections. Use Pame for the address-level route; this map is not a promise of a cross-Green-Line hotel service.
Cyprus Public Transport: Nicosia network mapVerify crossing and lawful entry
FCDO guidance identifies Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmaci as pedestrian crossings and warns of Republic of Cyprus entry problems after arrival through the north. The page is written for British passport holders; other travellers should confirm the rules with the relevant authorities.

The FCDO describes limited British consular support in the north. Read your own national advice and check the insurance cover for the intended stay and activities before treating a northern property as interchangeable with a southern one.
