Carlisle Bay Antigua

The beach was quiet and nicely secluded, and I was told the whole beach was free to use. I crossed over the steps to the hotel without any trouble, and it was a very pleasant beach. We also went beach hopping to Darkwood, where we found a roadside local food stop. Everything there was good, and it ended up being my best meal in Antigua so far 😜

Looking back, I had a fantastic stay and would recommend the resort, although a few things took the shine off the end of the holiday. The bill needed forensic checking because, even though I photographed every signed receipt, strange amounts appeared in the account. They were eventually corrected, but an accounting or data-entry problem like that should not happen. The renovated ocean view room was fabulous, and the staff, breakfast, The Jetty, and Indigo were mostly excellent. East and Ottimo were weaker. Service at East fell below the resort's usual level, and the food was mostly uninspiring apart from the dynamite shrimp. Ottimo's unusual table and chair arrangement made eating uncomfortable, while both the food and service were average. Housekeeping was inconsistent too. Our room was missed one day, though that was fixed later the same day, and I repeatedly had to ask for more shower gel and other toiletries. Even with those frustrations, the stay as a whole was very enjoyable.

The kids club turned out to be a game-changer. We were nervous about leaving our 2.5 year old with people we didn't know, but it quickly became clear why families choose Carlisle Bay for childcare and entertainment. The resort was lively without feeling crowded, which gave us plenty of time for R&R. We loved the beach and the beautiful property, and every member of the team treated our son like family. Their genuine care went far beyond what we expected. The restaurants were all good, so in hindsight skipping the all-inclusive food and drink option was a mistake. I'd recommend it unless you're planning to eat off the resort several times. After our early February vacation, we kept talking about how happy we were with the experience. The staff were amazing from beginning to end. Five out of five, and we have no doubt we'll return. We miss the Carlisle Bay staff already.

The restaurant team were friendly, attentive, and genuinely enjoyable to deal with, but that good service didn't extend to management. Management seemed disengaged and unresponsive during our stay, and that made a significant difference. The promised benefits through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts were not delivered. Upgrades were ignored even though the hotel's own website showed availability, and my Leading Hotels of the World Sterling status was overlooked completely. There was also no pre-arrival communication or acknowledgement, despite everything having been confirmed beforehand. At this price, the rooms were disappointing. They felt dated and clearly needed refurbishment, which didn't match the resort's luxury positioning. The frontline restaurant staff were excellent, but the room condition, lack of management attention, and missing benefits made the overall experience mixed.
