Hostel Colonial

The place was clean, the staff were nice, and the location was good. We’d booked four nights, but room #9 was VERY noisy because of an industrial ventilation unit outside and a window that barely closed. A bright light also shone straight in through a thin curtain. Thankfully, they let us switch rooms after two nights. Otherwise, I’d recommend it.

It was one of the cheapest options we found in the area, and the reviews looked decent. You get what you pay for, so keep expectations modest and you’ll be fine. The location is good and breakfast is included, though it’s more of a token than a filling meal. Our room was okay but tired, with sheets that didn’t fit the bed and very old towels. Staff were young and seemed more interested in chatting with each other than helping. I’m pretty sure one person was drunk on duty. At night, a manhole cover in the road rattled whenever cars went over it, at all hours.

The room was spacious enough and the hostel is close to the main places, but I came away a bit disappointed. The cleaning could be better, and the bathroom is very small. It has two showers, but only one could be used at a time. Breakfast is included, though it’s basic and doesn’t start until 8:00 am. If you need to leave early, there’s no other option. The hostel is on the first floor with no elevator, so you have to carry your bags upstairs. I think there are better places for the same price.

The central location is really nice, but the staff deserve the biggest praise. They were very helpful and understanding, and they speak English. Five stars for the service! I left for two days in Montevideo and locked my suitcase in a dorm locker here. They could have charged me for another day, but didn’t. When I came back to collect it, they let me use the Wi-Fi for half an hour so I could claim my bag, then gave me directions to the bus station. Just great.
