El Gualicho Hostel

The receptionists were incredibly nice, and the hostel is in a good spot with warm, cozy bedrooms and great facilities at good prices. Big thanks to Karen, who was a huge help with information on whale watching tours and other things to do. Great place to sleep!

We had a good stay overall. The place is clean and well cared for, and our room was decent and tidy, with a good shower, windows, AC, and even a TV. The included breakfast didn't do much for us, so we ate out every morning. The hostel is very conveniently located, and the staff are lovely, friendly, and helpful. Karla, if I have her name right, gave us tips and helped us plan each day. We'd booked a private room for four nights about a month ahead, since it was the only option we could find on Google, and the high-season price was pretty steep. Our car broke down on the way to town, so we lost two nights in another town. We called to say we'd arrive late, and the hostel mentioned a possible refund for those nights. That didn't end up happening, but we understand and don't hold it against them.

For what I paid, 4900 pesos, or 15 USD at the blue dollar rate, a dorm bed felt like a joke. At half that price, maybe it would be fair. The breakfast was extremely basic, just toast and biscuits, with milk, coffee, and tea to drink. There was only one Wi-Fi network for the whole hostel, and it hardly worked in the room. They also had us change the dorm bed sheets ourselves. I couldn't help wondering what the hostel staff actually do, beyond taking our money and cleaning the floor.

The hostel staff are friendly and great, and they help organize tours. The dorms each have their own private bathroom, and everything was very clean. There's a good kitchen and laundry service, too. Breakfast comes with the stay, though it's just the usual.
