Altos Ushuaia Hotel & Resto

The restaurant dinner was good and very reasonably priced, and the views are hard to beat. The inn sits above Ushuaia with wide town views through huge windows, and its rustic wood and comfortable furnishings give it a cozy feel. The standard rooms are a good size, very clean, and have comfortable beds, nice towels and linens, and a simple but complete bathroom with a bidet. Breakfast is basic, with canned fruit, meat and cheese, cereal, strong coffee, and pastries. Some staff were helpful, while others seemed indifferent. The hotel is great, though there’s room for improvement.

We weren’t prepared for this and didn’t have enough cash, so the payment situation caught us off guard. The price shown when booking, usually in dollars, may differ from what you pay at check-in: they told us card payments had to be in pesos using a rate different from the official one. Staff explained and showed us that they are legally allowed to use that rate, but it can mean paying at least 20% more. You can use cash, as many Argentinian businesses do. I’m sharing this to warn future guests. We later found another review describing the same thing, but hadn’t seen it before our stay. The location was okay, though I’d avoid a ground-floor room. The shower’s hot water was weak, and breakfast wasn’t great. We definitely won’t be back.

We felt at home with the staff right away. They were consistently kind and helpful, and breakfast and the rest of the kitchen were generous and delicious. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the view across town was breathtaking. Try the rabas!!

We were with a tour group, and while some people got expansive views of the town and waterfront, our room looked onto a tin roof. We paid the same, and since it was my birthday, I felt cheated. The room electrics wouldn’t work; we were told to wedge both cards in, which meant we both had to leave the room. There was no shuttle like at another hotel, so we had to book taxis. I’d stay in town instead.
