Dachstein West Sporthotel

The room was great, and the staff really went out of their way to make the stay a good one. I was there outside peak season, and they even opened the spa for me and accommodated my dietary restrictions. Shame the weather didn’t cooperate, I would’ve loved to sit on that adorable patio.

The staff were so kind, and thanks for the tea! We had a nice room, free parking, and a good breakfast. There are Langlauf tracks nearby, and it’s a perfect area for mountain biking. Great for a chilly overnight stop in the region, and probably for an active holiday too. Highly recommend!

The reception staff were helpful, the wait staff friendly, and breakfast was nice, with pastries, some hot dishes, cereals, cheese, and more. But there were several problems that made the stay disappointing. When we asked for tap water, they brought a bottle and charged us over €5. A cranberry juice and sparkling water cost €6. Our room was VERY noisy at night. Heavy vehicles, lorries, and buses regularly use the road outside, and the noise continued through the night, not just during the day. The walls were thin too, so we heard a lot from other guests and staff inside the hotel. There was no A/C, making the room VERY hot and hard to sleep in, and the shower was small. The window looked onto another hotel's balcony, rather than much of a view. We booked through a company that arranges hikes and transports luggage between hotels. The other hotels put our luggage in our room before we arrived; here, our cases were left in the middle of the lobby for anyone to take. We could check our suitcase before we’d even checked in. The hotel later blamed the luggage company, but only hotel staff or guests should have access to the room, and the cases weren’t even behind reception. I mentioned the view because Google Reviews asks about it. Some guests may have rooms overlooking the little river instead of beside the road, which might explain why many positive reviews don’t mention the noise. You can’t know when booking whether you’ll get a roadside room. The hotel’s reply mentioned that guests at other hotels might be happy with the look of the Sporthotel Dachstein West. Compared with some other places in town, this hotel’s exterior needs cleaning and attention. I was also unhappy with the immature reply and its lack of responsibility for the issues I raised. On my hiking trip, I stayed in a different hotel every night between Golling and Bad Goisern, and this one was far below the others. The response made it seem like the hotel thought there were no problems, so I took a star off for poor service.

The town is stunning, and I’d like to visit again, just not stay at this hotel. It was okay, but not as clean as I expected from an Austrian hotel. Make sure you’ve had dinner by 8 pm, because everything in town closes then and you’ll be left hungry.
