Hotel Grundlhof

A family-run place with really tasty homemade food using local ingredients. Everything was very clean, and Wildkogel arena is about five minutes away by car. There’s also a bus twice in the morning. Highly recommend!

The boss gave us a great tip on where to find minerals, and there’s a great play area for children. It’s a quiet, easy-to-reach place with plenty of parking, and the local knowledge they share is exceptional. The complimentary national park card makes the stay good value, even great, since it includes one free cable car ride per day. Ask the staff how it works. A few things kept it from being five stars for me. Service was good, though some staff seemed tired, and I missed a little of the usual Tyrolean hospitality. Breakfast was good, but later on the food had run out, and I’ve had better breakfasts at three-star places. There was no fridge, tea or coffee, or glasses in the room. Those things were manageable, but they mattered to me. The dining room felt plain and functional, and the wellness area was only open from 16:00 to 19:00, overlapping with dinner from 18:00 to 19:00, so the window was short.

The place looked lovely and the people were friendly, but our checkout turned into a serious problem. I checked in without being charged for the room. When my wife checked out, she paid the balance, but was charged only for drinks because she thought I’d already paid for the room. The hotel then called the police and reported that we’d left without paying. We were pulled over about 15 miles away, had our passports confiscated, and were escorted back to the hotel. I found it outrageous that, after the hotel had forgotten to bill my wife, they said we’d done a runner. The stay itself was okay, but I won’t be coming back.

The room was clean and big enough for our little family. The hotel is quite nice, and Kitzbühel and Mittersill aren’t far away. Krimml Waterfalls is also about a 25-minute drive. Breakfast runs from 7 to 10 am, with a good variety. The eggs were a headache, though. You have to boil them yourself, and every time I tried, someone took them, so either wait beside the boiler until yours is done or give up on having one. Sauna hours are 4 to 6 pm. If you’re skiing, make sure you’re back in time, and register beforehand.
