Christmas Eve was the most magical part. The children decorated the tree together, then the family who runs Stegerhof gathered everyone in the family room for lovely Christmas music and stories. We all got a small gift, and with snow falling softly over the mountains, it felt like being welcomed into their home for a cozy celebration. We came over Christmas with my two girls, aged 4 and 7. On our third day, all three of us came down with laryngitis, which could easily have wrecked the holiday. The staff somehow made it the relaxing break we needed while we recovered. The cleaning staff took care of our room and kindly offered to wash our laundry. At meals, the dining room team went out of their way to make cocoa and plain pasta when the kids were too sick to eat anything else. The hotel is cozy and quiet, with plenty of space to rest. The pool was great, the kids' pool was nicely heated, and the peaceful spa had excellent steam rooms that helped with my recovery. There's a small ski mountain a short walk down the road, and a regular tractor-train runs from the hotel to the slopes. Kids can also pet ponies, donkeys, sheep, rabbits, and guinea pigs. The daily activity schedule included a stone-polishing workshop that my rock-obsessed kids loved. Every part of our stay was wonderful. I can't recommend this hotel enough.
The location was stunning, and everything was so conveniently close. I was impressed by the service from the moment the train station elevator doors opened and the shuttle driver recognized us. Check-in and check-out were relaxed and flexible, and we could keep using the services even after checking out. Stegerhof exceeded my high expectations.
The kids had loads to do, and we all had a great time at our first kinder hotel. The concept isn't really a thing in the US. It took the children a day or two to settle into the kids club, but they got comfortable with it. The food was great, especially the Styrian local dishes. My favorite was that our 15-month-old, who usually doesn't eat much solid food, finished a whole plate of Kaiserschmarn! A couple of things could work better: the kids club could open before 0930, since our children are usually up around 0530-0600. Also, the smoking areas are under some room balconies. People may need to dry clothes or towels there and not want them smelling of smoke, and being near smoke is incredibly dangerous for children.
The service and staff were very, very nice, and the hotel has a good concept with several enjoyable outdoor activities for the whole family. Still, the rooms felt a bit outdated for this price, and the location is somewhat isolated. After 22:00, every facility closes, including the bar. There seemed to be a lot on offer for parents, but not much for us once a child went to bed late, and I expected more to do after bedtime. About 90% of the other guests were Austrian or German-speaking, so it wasn't easy to chat or make small talk. It's a great hotel, depending on what you're looking for at this price.
The chef's team and the waiters and waitresses put in a great effort, and the food had a wide choice and tasted delicious, even to my picky kids. The staff were super friendly. It's a very nice, clean hotel with excellent facilities for children and parents alike. Our room was large enough, and the location was great. The hotel provides transfers to the ski school and main ski area. We look forward to coming back.
