The staff were nice, and the apartment itself was new, spacious, and had a comfortable bed. The kitchen was good in general, though the people who chose its appliances don’t seem to cook much: there was an oven but no suitable dish for using it. Still, we arrived to dead insects and cobwebs, and the place hadn’t been properly cleaned. The open rubbish bin became smelly very quickly on a summer day. The booking said it would be cleaned daily, but it wasn’t, and although washing machine access was promised, there was none. Parking was quite far away, so carrying a heavy bag over the pebbled path was a lot. There was no proper air conditioning either. If the listing hadn’t called it “luxurious,” and the price had been lower, I’d say it was a solid effort. As it was, the stay was very, very disappointing.

The view from Dürnstein down to the Danube is magnificent, and the town itself is lovely, with pretty lanes and decorated house fronts. The inns serve excellent food. Make sure to try the apricot ice cream at the Duernsteinerhof, it was especially delicious.

We spent five hours exploring, and there’s a lot to see: walk beside the Danube, visit the old town and vineyards, have lunch at a restaurant, then climb up to the ruins of the 12th-century castle and fortress. The view is magnificent, though getting there means climbing stone steps, which can be hard for older people. Some sources say the fortress was a prison where King Lionheart was held before being ransomed. These days there are heaps of stones and a couple of walls. Parking costs 6 euros per day.
