Gasthof Botenwirt

We came here for an early dinner after checking in at the pension next door, which had no restaurant of its own. It seemed like a local hangout: a couple of tables were full of people having afternoon drinks and snacks, talking and laughing, and a hiking couple were just finishing their drinks as we arrived. The menu wasn’t huge, but had what looked like typical Austrian dishes, and the meals seemed reasonably priced. My beef goulash was very tasty, with tender, well-seasoned meat. I don’t usually prefer bread dumplings over potato ones, but this one had plenty of flavor and was great for soaking up the gravy. My wife’s salad was perhaps a bit too heavily dressed, but the vegetables and potato croquettes were tasty. Under the lettuce were the usual shredded carrots and cabbage, plus sliced cucumbers prepared with vinegar and spices. We enjoyed dinner, then simply walked across the parking lot to our room next door.

It’s an easy walk from around town, and the food is always good, authentic Austrian cooking at decent prices, especially the lunch specials. Several generations of the family business work both out front and behind the scenes. There used to be an air rifle range about 10 meters long in the basement, but it’s now closed to the public and only the local shooting club can use it.

The room was clean and comfortable, with a lovely view and a balcony. Breakfast was simple but really good, and you could also have lunch or dinner there. The hosts were so kind and helpful, and getting around by car, bus or train was easy. We even got a guest mobility card. There’s no small fridge, which was about the only thing I missed, but the place had everything we needed for a few days of hiking or relaxing. Hintersee is just two bus stops away, with gorgeous views and places to swim. Thanks to our host for all the help and for making this stay possible!

We only ate at the restaurant, but the food was great and the staff were nice. The prices were good, and despite being right by the road, it was quiet enough to enjoy our meal.
