Appartement Schmidl

We spent three weeks here in summer and enjoyed every day. The apartment is good value in a beautiful part of Carinthia, with a great view from the terrace for eating or having a glass of wine in the evening. It has two large bedrooms with closets and satellite TV in both, Wi-Fi, a bathroom with shower and bath, a separate toilet, and a modern equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, large refrigerator, oven, microwave, and washing machine. There’s free parking in front of the house. It isn’t wheelchair accessible, there’s no elevator, and there are no stairs. The host is very friendly and clearly enjoys having guests. We had a little chat in German in the morning or afternoon, and she gave us good advice about the area. She brought fresh towels and collected the trash each week, and sometimes gave us delicious tomatoes from the garden. Flattach and the small nearby villages aren’t much like a lively city, but there’s enough around: an outdoor swimming pool, three good restaurants, a grocery store, and a bakery, all within walking distance. The way up is a bit steep. The apartment is at the edge of the village, but that wasn’t an issue for us. This part of western Carinthia has lots of cable cars, gorges, swimming pools, and scenic roads. Farther east there are museums, clomping parks, and boat trips. We recommend getting the Kärnten Card, as it will save you a lot of money.

The apartment was clean and cozy, with a lovely view over the valley and a bus connection to the Molltaler glacier nearby. But the bus doesn't come often, so having a car is much more practical. Parking at the ski resort is free. Check the local shop's closing time too, since the first large supermarket is 30k from Flattah. What bothered me most was the owner. She didn't give us basic information about the area or the ski resort, then came to the door at 9:50 to remind us to leave, seeming eager to see us go. I almost regret taking the time to clean the kitchen and apartment.

The kitchen had everything we needed, and the accommodation was modern, very clean, and lovely. Just know that the owner speaks German only.
