Clean, pleasant accommodation.

We had a very pleasant stay at this family hotel. The owners were both kind and helpful, and the whole place was clean. Breakfast was excellent. I’d definitely stay here again if I return.

The fresh breakfast had plenty of choice, and the beds were good. We were warmly welcomed by the Bürtlmair family into their lovely old Austrian country house. The rooms were spacious, beautiful, and very clean, and the location is fantastic. You can feel the care they put into everything. We’ll certainly come back often.

What stood out most was how helpful Maria and Ferdinand Bürtlmayr were. They were always ready with hiking advice, restaurant suggestions, or help with anything else. Maria Bürtlmair and I even agreed on a code so she’d know in the evening that I’d returned safely from the mountain. The hotel is a lovely base in a scenic valley, right at its far end. I was there in early to mid-July, still the off-season, so it wasn’t crowded. Trails begin right outside, and there’s also a bus stop about 100 metres away. The supermarket, bank, café, gondola, and restaurants are all within a 13-minute walk. To get there, take the regional train from Linz to Hinterstoder; the bus from the station into town usually leaves at the same time as the train. Three bus routes run through the valley, which is very handy. In about 20 minutes you can ride from the hotel to the valley’s end, where the Steyr River rises and you can eat at Gasthof Baumschlagereith. The Dolomite Circuit, a particularly beautiful alpine loop, starts there too. I slept really well after hiking, with the gentle sound of the Steyr River nearby. My room was very comfortable, tastefully furnished, and spotless. The double bed suited me because the mattress wasn’t too soft. In the mid-July heat, around 30 degrees Celsius during the day, the very thin duvet was just right since nights weren’t cold. I ordered mine directly from Aldi’s online store. There’s a wool blanket in the closet for anyone who gets chilly. I brought my usual 40x80 cm pillow, so I had everything I needed. Breakfast was outstanding: a modest but balanced spread of fresh regional products, always plentiful and regularly replenished. They promptly handled special requests too. I brought my own oat milk from SPAR, and they heated it for my essential oat milk latte. For a three-star place, the amenities were all there: a cozy breakfast room with four tables, useful hiking maps and local information, and a hairdryer in the bathroom. Wi-Fi worked very well. Twice, I waited a few minutes for it in the evenings on the top floor, which was rare and no problem. The basement has a shoe room with a cleaning machine, and the foyer, stairs, breakfast room, and guest room were always impeccably clean and looked new. Outside was well kept and inviting. The Steyr River runs directly behind the building, where you can cool your tired feet after hiking or even sit in the water. The price felt more than fair for the accommodation, meals, and service. This bed and breakfast in Upper Austria is a real gem, and the owners’ warmth made my stay special. I missed a few hikes and will definitely come back. Summer bookings run from late June to late September. I’d highly recommend it to hikers and nature lovers. Thanks for a wonderful stay, and see you soon!
