Bauernhof "Hinterreith"

The breakfast was excellent, and the blackberry jam tasted heavenly. For the price, it’s more than enough for a one-night stay. It’s a very cozy place, a real farmhouse. We stayed one night. There weren’t any glasses or toothbrush cups for drinks at night, unfortunately. Our companions’ room did have some, but they’d already been used.

I went in August and found the heat hard to bear because the dining area has no air conditioning. This is a self-service seafood restaurant in central Salzburg. The drinks are pricey for that kind of place, and the food is expensive despite being poor quality. My spaghetti with shrimp was definitely overcooked, while the precooked shrimp and scampi were quite tough.

For the three of us, the annex apartment was spacious, with plenty of parking outside and a shed where we could lock our bicycles. Although it’s on a main road, nights were quiet, with no traffic noise. A pizzeria, gas station, and bank are all within a ten-minute walk. It was acceptable for one inexpensive night while we were cycling, and breakfast was available to book at a reasonable price. The cleaning was a serious problem. There was a garbage bag from the previous guests in the bathroom, exposed wires, and the main door wouldn’t lock from inside. Surfaces hadn’t been mopped, there was scum under the bed, and the floors looked as if they hadn’t been washed or vacuumed for weeks. Towels and bed linen were fresh, and toilet paper was provided, but bring your own soap.

We spent three weeks here every summer for 15 years when we were children, and grew up alongside the kids, Andreas and Johannes. It was always clean, breakfast was great, and we were allowed to do everything. It’s a farm, after all, and it felt like our second home, even though it’s been a long time. We’ve just heard about Johannes, and send our condolences. We couldn’t make it this year, but hope to next year. I’d love to see it all again.
