Almhütte Ausserberglet, Sandalm

The view was breathtaking, and we were lucky to have good weather. Reaching the place in snow might be difficult, though. If you’re happy without much comfort and like staying at 1,700 metres, it could suit you. We arrived around 9:30 p.m. at the end of November and found ourselves high on the mountain in front of a no entry sign, unsure where the accommodation was. After we called, the landlady came out with a flashlight. There was no courtyard light or sign to guide us. She led us down an outdoor staircase, then a wooden staircase and across a balcony, using a mobile phone light. Our simple, rustic room had a double bed and a single bed, but no toilet or shower. To use the bathroom, we had to leave the room and cross the balcony to the adjoining room, which was quite something in winter. The bathroom itself was basic, with a toilet, shower and sink. Getting to breakfast also meant crossing a balcony and going down a staircase into the house. Breakfast was okay, with rolls and bread, sausage, cheese, eggs and jam. The coffee was disappointing because the capsules had long expired, so coffee was brought up from the valley.
