Haus Dabaklamm

The guesthouse sits at the end of the road, right by a national park with daytime trekking, and the drive there from Hungary was incredibly scenic. It’s a great base for exploring nature with family or friends. Our room was clean, though it had a cinnamon smell I don’t like; I could manage it. There’s a clean, well-equipped shared kitchen, and each morning they prepare a variety of simple Western-style breakfast items. I especially loved the homemade berry jam. There’s even a tiny petrol spot at the guesthouse, and bus stops run all the way to the end of the road.

We’ve stayed at Haus Dabaklamm several times during summer over the past four years, and plan to come back. It’s peaceful, with plenty of walks starting right from the house, though you really do need a car. The owner gives you a lovely warm welcome, and everything is spotless, including the big guest kitchen, which has all you need for self-catering. Even if you only need to keep food and drinks cold, the refrigerator is there. If you’d rather not cook, there’s a hotel just 100 metres away with excellent food at reasonable prices.

The house is in a lovely, quiet spot, but they’re currently rebuilding, which isn’t okay. Ask for a room with a balcony so you don’t end up at the back without a view.

A little river runs under the house, high up in the mountains inside a national park. Very nice.
