Hotel Dermuth Klagenfurt

We waited 1 hour and 45 minutes and had only managed to eat the soup. We’d reserved dinner for two, but there was no table ready when we arrived, even though the restaurant wasn’t very busy, and the waiter we approached ignored us. Eventually we were offered a garden table that hadn’t been set. There was no menu or wine list, plates or cutlery. A waiter asked in broken German what we wanted to drink. After more waiting, we ordered wine, water, soups, and two mains: Kärntner Kasnudeln and salad, plus Tafelspitz with its accompaniments for me. It had been praised as the house signature dish. The soup eventually came, then service stopped completely. We saw no waiter for 45 minutes. My boiled beef sat cooling in its casserole, and no clean plates or side dishes appeared. The neighboring tables weren’t getting better service either. When the mains finally arrived, I had to send the beef back to be reheated. The waitress argued about how stressed she was because there were other customers, instead of apologizing. The food was mediocre at best and the service was incredibly bad. The Tafelspitz at Dermuth‘s was over €30, plus €3 couvert, but the beef wasn’t tender and the potato rösti and cream spinach were ruined by too much salt. One Griessnockerl cost another €3, and Schnittlauchsauce (chive sauce) was €4 extra. The bill came to €104 for two soups, two mains, a bottle of Austrian Merlot, and two bottles of mineral water. At that price, you could eat much better and in style at the renowned Plachutta’s restaurant in Hietzing in Vienna. If you’re planning a pleasant evening with good food, go elsewhere. Avoid Dermuth‘s if you can. If you’re staying at the nearby hotel of the same name, take a taxi downtown; there are plenty of better alternatives.
