Am Domplatz

A superb little hotel in a perfect spot opposite the Mariendom, with a great atmosphere. The rooms have a strong design focus, including a shower and toilet section that sticks out into the room. Behind the washbasin is a large glass window, screened by a giant sliding partition. With the window open, the bathroom looks like a 1970s doorman’s info office in your bedroom. The breakfast buffet is almost perfect. Really cold milk for the muesli would have made it better.

This is my personal opinion. During a business trip, a concert took place outside the hotel, but guests weren’t told about it, and the hotel showed no understanding that the noise might disturb them. Guests weren’t allowed to be in the hallway. The worst part was the hotel director, Mr. Bortoli, who was rude and extremely aggressive, telling guests to shut up and go straight back to their rooms. Ironically, he was sitting with friends in the first-floor hallway enjoying the concert. The next morning, the owner shouted across the lobby that he had never seen so many idiots in his hotel as the night before. The location was the only positive. The towels were awful, the blanket too small for an adult, the pillows cheap, the Wi-Fi spotty, and there was no way to iron in the room. Because of the owner’s attitude, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. I suggest reading the other negative reviews.

We found some good restaurants within walking distance, and getting there by bike was easy. The place is lovely and in a great spot. We stayed Sunday night during a cycling trip, and it felt almost empty. I got the impression it usually caters to business guests.

The room was comfortable and thoughtfully laid out, even though it was simple. We loved waking up to Austria’s largest cathedral framed by the floor-to-ceiling windows. Hotel am Domplatz also has really appealing, interesting decor. I'd say a cathedral-facing room is worth choosing.
