After a 13-hour drive with our two children and dog, we arrived at 9.30pm and were told dogs weren’t allowed. We’d booked four people and two rooms, but the lady “welcoming” us said her booking showed only two adults. She also said our three-month-old toy poodle didn’t seem clean. We’d booked because the guesthouse was advertised as pet-friendly, and had followed its message asking us to mention pets and breakfast preferences at check-in. Only then were we told that she didn’t accept dogs and that just one room allowed pets, something we’d never been told earlier. Being turned away so late was stressful and unacceptable, especially with two small children. Her manner as a host was completely lacking. If pets can’t reliably stay, the place shouldn’t be listed as pet-friendly. Half an hour later, an edit: right after our incident, the guesthouse changed its listing to say “pets are not allowed.” At least they removed it from the pet-friendly list and acknowledged the mistake. That earns them one star.
