The staff are friendly and happy to help with getting around or planning activities. Ask about the Mobility Card for local buses, which run hourly in both directions through the Maltatal valley. You can also ask for a bike and follow the riverside bike lane to Künstlerstadt Gmünd in Kärnten, about a 10-minute ride. This rustic family hotel sits just outside Gmünd in the Malta/Fischertratten valley area, close to the Malta river and A10 motorway, on the way to Kölnbrein arch dam in the High Tauern mountain range. It’s good value if you want to visit the sights nearby, with good connections to Spittal, Villach, and elsewhere. Camping and a supermarket are right next door. The restaurant serves good food, with Greek and Italian touches as well as local schnitzels and weekly or special offers. Breakfast is great for a small hotel or hostel, with egg dishes, pancakes, and warm toast available on request.

We were absolutely delighted with our stay. The rooms were clean and cosy, and we enjoyed some delicious Italian pizza as well as a great level of service. The host was wonderful and shared some interesting suggestions for the rest of our trip.

We visit Maltatal several times each summer, and always make a point of having pizza here. It’s among the best in Austria. The fresh, delicious toppings are great, and I especially love the crust’s char from the wood oven. The owners are super friendly and put a lot of effort into making it a great experience.

The place has a traditional Austrian feel, tucked nicely among the mountains. Staff were helpful and even offered room service. Our room was tidy, very clean, and traditionally decorated. We also had dinner here, good food and beer at a good price. Would recommend!

A real gem in the Austrian valleys. The hotel has a welcoming feel, mixing traditional touches with modern design, which I liked. The pizza was superb, proper Italian quality. And try the “Hugo” cocktail, it’s like heaven in a glass. Thanks, I hope to return soon.
