Hotel Kernwirt

For a stop on the way south during a hot summer, I’d gladly come back. The air is wonderfully cool and fresh, a welcome break from the heat. Rooms are simple but clean and good value, and late check-in was no trouble at all. Breakfast was good too, and the landlady was very friendly and welcoming.

The location is right in the heart of town, which was ideal. We stayed two nights at the Kernwirt, part of the Steffl+Wallner hotel group. Reception and breakfast are in the main hotel, while the Kernwirt reception is mostly decorative, which is fine for a three-star place. The rooms were dated, as the photos show, but clean, functional, and adequate for a short ski trip despite a few small issues. They were well heated and room service was good. Breakfast was very good, and the waiters, reception staff, and others were friendly and attentive, even accommodating special requests. There’s also a sauna, not very modern but with excellent temperatures above 80°C; with few people using it, it was a great experience. The price was reasonable.

In lovely Mauterndorf, the hotel is quiet, very clean, and ideally situated. A night’s stay includes free entry to the castle overlooking the medieval village. Breakfast is included and very generous, and the staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful. I highly recommend staying here.

The breakfast situation was a real problem for us. We had booked two rooms for one night as a stopover, bringing our dog, who was included in the reservation and paid for. Breakfast was meant to be served at a nearby hotel, but dogs weren’t allowed there, which was obviously unacceptable. The breakfast itself was also very mediocre. Our rooms were clean, but quite dated, and the ancient carpet was unacceptable to me. We definitely wouldn’t book again.
