Alte Krone

We had a spacious, spotless apartment and a great family ski holiday at Alte Krone. Its position by the Moos and Zaferna lifts makes it almost ski-in, ski-out, and there’s a rodel track across the street. We stayed on half board. Breakfast had plenty of choice and fresh bread, while the dinner options were all delicious. The pool and spa were very good, and the staff were attentive and helpful.

I’ve stopped by the hotel terrace for lunch a few times, though I haven’t stayed there. It’s a sunny, pleasant spot with good food and drinks, and the staff are friendly. I’d recommend the Wiener Kalbsschnitzel.

We spent the week after Christmas here and had nearly our best ever hotel experience. The four-course half-board dinners were a treat every day, with three main options including a vegetarian one. Breakfast was a very good buffet, with everything freshly prepared, and there were nice choices for the younger kids at dinner. The reception helped arrange flowers and a cake for a birthday, and it was all ready on time. The staff were very friendly. Our three nephews enjoyed the indoor pool, despite the German don't jump police, and we liked the wellness area and sauna.

We ended our winter sports holiday with dinner at Alte Krone because the dishes and quality looked promising from outside. Inside looked polished and professional compared with other restaurants in Mittelberg, but the meal turned into a string of service problems. Staff seemed unfriendly to other visitors because they were not hotel residents, and when my wife was still choosing, the waiter asked me to order instead. I had to explain that we were waiting for her. I ordered the Kroner Burger, but waited over 30 minutes while the rest of my family ate. The waiter then said he thought I had ordered a Cordon Bleu, which I hadn’t. I asked about a discount, but he didn’t understand me in English. His manager said no discount was possible and offered a free coffee. I took it because I was furious by then, though a simple apology would have helped. Later, the waiter made a joke about the Cordon Bleu that I really couldn’t handle. The food itself was okay, not great. The mistakes kept coming. The waiter took my wife’s plate while we were still eating, then brought a cappuccino we hadn’t ordered along with the tea, coffee and cola we had asked for. When we paid by credit card, the manager brought the machine and walked away, leaving us to operate it ourselves. A dropped glass was ignored too. My advice to the owners and staff: teach waiters basic manners, don’t clear plates before everyone is done, and leave an upset customer alone instead of making jokes. If a table is reserved for hotel residents, politely direct other diners elsewhere rather than getting angry. Clean up when a glass breaks, apologize for long waits, and take responsibility for complaints by offering a solution. If a waiter is struggling, let someone else take over the table. And help guests with the card machine instead of leaving them to work it out. The food was okay to good, but the service was really poor. I’d go somewhere else, there are plenty of friendlier places.
