Pension MATE

Two stars may be one too many. This is a strange, messy place. There's no reception, you just take a key yourself and let yourself in. You might even look at more than one room before choosing. The pension is very worn and badly needs renovation. Old junk like beds and mattresses fills the staircases. The water was either cold or very cold, and the rooms were cold too, even on a warm spring day. You can hear absolutely everything in the hallway, from people walking to doors opening and closing. My room was missing a ceiling lamp, and the bathroom had a water leak. The price for what you get is ridiculous. Next time, for the Neusiedlersee Rennrad Marathon, I'd rather pay more to stay somewhere else in the city, or go to Sopron. I can't recommend this place unless they renovate it or greatly reduce the nightly price.

The rooms were clean, and the location near the center of Mörbisch worked well. It was also great that the shuttle to the Mörbisch Lake Festival passes close by. The guesthouse is quite old, though, and the bathtub was in such poor shape that it probably needs replacing. Finding reception took a bit of effort, and the receptionist seemed a little disorganized, although he was friendly. His Hungarian phone number had poor reception, which made things harder while he was working in Austria.

The smell of damp, mildew and mold in the hallways and rooms was unbearable, and the bed linen smelled awful too. I have no idea whether it ever gets changed. Breakfast apparently hasn't been served since 2024. The entrance area looked like a flea market, and the staircases were blocked by piles of old mattresses and other things. Some hallways were completely dark because the lights were broken. Even outside, the place looked like it might not still be open. The glass panes over the entrance were broken, ground-floor windows were hanging half off, and the entrance door was locked. Several phone numbers posted on the building no longer worked. At the “reception,” the young man was already overwhelmed during check-in, and I didn't see any other staff. The owner may have needed the breakfast space for wardrobes and flea market goods, or perhaps the health department had visited. This is a complete dump, the worst hotel I've ever seen. The town of Mörbisch should shut it down!

The building is old, and some parts need renovation or are being renovated, but I was only looking for somewhere to sleep after the festival, not a place to buy. The rooms were clean, parking was available, and the receptionist was really friendly. The location is great and the price for what you get is good. I don't get the other reviews. At a low price, you can't expect a luxury hotel. Thumbs up for this guesthouse! 👌
