Burgstaller

The staff were the best part of our family holiday at Familiengut Burgstaller. Everyone, from the restaurant and reception to room service and the bar, was friendly and smiling. Our room was large, cozy, clean, and tidy, with a balcony and bathroom. The spa was great for both our child and us, and every meal was excellent with lots of variety. It’s well placed for a ski trip, about 15 minutes from Bad Kleinkircheim and 30 minutes from Gerlitzen Alpe or Turracher hohe. We’d definitely recommend it to families with children and would come back.

The new rooms and sauna were a great surprise, and there was a good variety of food. The hospitality was five stars. We’re really looking forward to coming back. 👏

I’m writing this completely exhausted, with caffeine the only thing keeping me awake. My room was directly above the bar. The first night was after New Year’s Eve, so I didn’t complain about the noise because I thought staff had just that night to celebrate. The party went on until about 2 am. On the third night, people were celebrating a birthday at the bar and it was even louder. I went down to say it was unbearable and impossible to sleep, and they did turn it down. Still, guests shouldn’t be put in the room I had, or people shouldn’t be allowed to party loudly at midnight. Dinner was another disappointment. The main course took a long time to arrive, and one family waited about an hour and still hadn’t received theirs within the two hour dinner window. The portion was very small for me. You can fill out your meal at the self service tables, which sounds good, but there was no meat there. They had some in the kids’ section, but you aren’t allowed to eat that, so it wasn’t appealing for someone like me who likes meat. The sauna was probably the best part: very good and relaxing, with bio, Finnish, and another sauna I didn’t try. There’s a modern indoor “garden” looking onto the garden, plus tea and another room with beds to rest. If you get room No. 101, ask to move, or you may leave more tired than you arrived. PS: I forgot to mention, when you flushed the toilet in our room, it spilled out...

There are some good things for children here: a huge playground, animals they can interact with, a tennis court, horses, and a pony they can ride. They can visit the sheep, goats, and rabbits, and climb the stairs behind the fence. Parking is large and next to the entrance, but we couldn’t find it at first because there were no signs saying it was hotel parking until someone told us. The meal itself was good. The rooms are big, with good beds and a large balcony. A lot of the furniture is old, though, and the rooms have no cups, teapot, tea bags, or fridge. There’s no bar either, so if you buy something for yourself or the children, there’s nowhere to keep it. I asked for cups and got plastic ones, like those in the bathroom for brushing teeth. The TV is small and off to the side of the bed. We had a good balcony, but where’s the charger? Staff weren’t friendly or keen to help. We waited 40 minutes for chicken at the restaurant, and waits for dinner mains were generally long. Not every waiter speaks English, so asking about a missing dish didn’t get us far. At reception, when I asked about a cup, they said, “Cups? What cups?” The way staff behaved made us reluctant to ask for anything. The kids’ club opens at 12, which is too late, and it’s basically two rooms where children are left to themselves. We chose the hotel expecting games and activities with childcare, but that wasn’t what we found. Breakfast starts at 7-30, too late for our hungry kids, who are awake at 6. And the beer wasn’t tasty, to say the least. The sauna and outdoor pool were closed at 9 AM, while the water in the other, kids’ pool wasn’t very warm. Who is this hotel for if everything closes in the morning?
