Der Knappenhof Hotel Restaurant

Some of the trails up and down the Rax mountains were even used by Sigmund Freud when he lived here. The hotel sits at the base of the mountains, with lots of trails nearby. It’s clean, modern, and well cared for, and every room has a jaw-dropping view. I’d really recommend visiting in summer or winter.

The food was good and the view was lovely, so I have no complaints about either. What made our short visit unpleasant was the terrible service. We weren’t staying overnight, we just wanted to freshen up before hiking up the mountain on a particularly hot day. We asked beforehand and were kindly directed to a table outside. Fifteen minutes later, someone asked us to pay, but didn’t tell us to leave. That might have been a misunderstanding, and we didn’t think much of it at first. But when my wife came out of the toilet, a woman asked her very insistently and unfriendly whether she planned to consume anything and what she was doing there. My wife explained she was waiting for me and that we’d already ordered something. Along with the earlier mix-up, this left us feeling we’d been treated badly without cause. We had asked if we could have drinks there. At least half the tables were empty, and we weren’t rude or loud.

We paid a 500 euro deposit in February for a seminar reservation, but the seminar was cancelled and they never returned the money. For weeks, they didn’t answer our ten attempts to reach them by phone or email. Eventually Mrs Brigitte KLENNER KAINDL texted that she would not pay anything back for “internal reasons.” Do NOT trust this company.
