House Wilderer Pichl

The mountain views across the Alps are breathtaking, and the wooden chalets feel authentic, cozy, and peaceful. Beautiful craftsmanship inside made the stay feel warm and special.

We spent 8 nights here with our 3-year old and enjoyed every day in Pichl, Schladming and Ramsau. Even when the weather wasn't great, we still enjoyed a day at the resort. A wonderful, peaceful place for a holiday.

The location is jaw dropping. Check the pictures, though even after a week here I was still amazed. The restaurant and sauna area were pretty good, and it feels like they know what they're doing. Each evening there's a new five course tasting menu, with optional wine pairing. I was skeptical on the first day, but from the second day on we went with their wine recommendations. I really appreciated that all the wines were Austrian, accessible, and around 10 euro shelf price. Every one paired perfectly with the suggested dishes. This didn't feel like the usual ski resort experience.

We went back to our favorite restaurant after a two-year covid break, but unfortunately won't return. It was half empty, yet we waited over an hour for the food. No covert was served, so we got really hungry. After half an hour, they told us the soup we'd chosen from the regular menu wasn't available, so we switched to broth with cheese dumplings. It was oversalted, though still the best of the dishes we tried. The 41 euro beef steak was unimaginative and tough. We asked for medium rare, but the crust was half a cm cooked through and completely dry. The store bought fries were unseasoned. The fish was average with no distinct flavor. The venison steak had a nice design but an odd taste, probably because of the poppy seed wrapper. The pancakes were old, dry, and hard, probably reheated. Creme Brule wasn't bad, but was completely cold and the sugar hadn't been freshly flame caramelized. The espresso macchiato looked like colored water from a vending machine. The menu is complicated and seems focused on presentation, while taste and quality are low end. We won't come back. It's a pity, since we really liked this restaurant 2 years ago, and that's the only reason I gave it two stars.
