Hotel Calmo

A clean enough, affordable hotel with good heating and hot water. Spittelau Station is about a five-minute walk away, and it’s four stops from the city center. The nearby tram station can make things a little noisy at times, but it was tolerable.

We booked this place for our trip to Austria, but the day before we were due to arrive our three-month-old baby became seriously ill, so we had to cancel. I contacted both the property and Booking.com straight away. The hotel agreed to change our dates, yet later charged us for a night we never used. Booking.com support was acceptable, but the hotel was extremely unhelpful. I spoke with Booking.com several times and sent the hotel multiple messages without getting useful support. We won’t choose this accommodation again when visiting Vienna, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

The rooms were okay and clean, and the breakfast staff were kind and polite. But our first impression at the front desk was awful. After a long drive, I arrived with my wife and daughter, and the woman at reception made faces when she saw our daughter and told us the room was for two, not three. We’d called ahead and been told there was no extra charge for children under 12. The paperwork was uncomfortable throughout because of her behavior. We booked two nights, but this will be our first and last stay here.

Room 208 at the back was quiet, and the updated bathroom had a tub. The room itself was basic, with no fridge, but earplugs were provided. There are lots of smokers outside the entrance, and the tram runs in front of the hotel. Breakfast was great at Euro 14, and the front desk staff were friendly, though the desk is staffed only until 10pm. Trams and the subway make all the attractions easy to reach.
