The building and location are the strongest parts of the stay, with an impressive imperial look in a quiet spot near the monuments. But the experience felt closer to three stars than five. Our bed was just a duvet folded over a fitted sheet, so we had to make it ourselves at night, and the towels and toiletries seemed too basic for the rating. Breakfast tasted good, though there was fruit salad but no fresh fruit. Service was average: staff cleared plates and cutlery before we were finished, then didn't replace the cutlery even when more food was still on the table. The breakfast room was a letdown too, plain white with blue chairs, some stained, and paintings for sale that didn't fit the hotel's style. A good place to stay, but not five-star value.

The location is nice, but the hotel looks old and really needs an upgrade. Staff weren't especially friendly, and breakfast was just average with too little room for everyone. We'd still come back and give it another chance.

We paid extra for a junior suite, and that room was good. The superior rooms, though, seem very basic, with no lower categories to compare them to. Are all the baths so worn that the cast iron shows through the remaining enamel? Breakfast had a very good selection, and the city centre is a short walk away. There are plenty of restaurants near the hotel too.

The location makes it easy to see the city, and the main Christmas market is only a five minute walk away, well worth visiting. I also loved the breakfast, with lots of tasty choices, and the beds were lovely. Our room was clean and tidy, with a great walk-in shower and plenty of hot water. Reception staff were helpful and efficient. It's an old-style hotel with lots of character and chandeliers, and I loved the blue curtains.

The whole place has a warm, familiar nostalgia for the past, even though the atmosphere is quite grand. It feels like stepping into the century before last, with lobby paintings, winding staircases, complicated corridors and crystal chandeliers. A lovely fit for anyone who enjoys the old-fashioned feel.
