Strudlhof Hotel

Kirill made our stay a pleasant one. He was friendly and attentive, and got us checked in ahead of the usual time quickly and without any hassle. That left us with a very positive impression of the hotel :)

We chose this as a fairly cheap place to stay while visiting Vienna, and it did meet that need. But it didn't feel like a four star hotel, and we slept badly. The room was freezing, with loud cold air conditioning that we couldn't switch off. The beds seemed old, and the pillows and duvets were incredibly thin. I asked staff twice for another pillow, but it never made it to our room.

We spent four days here and were really satisfied. The location was very good, with everything close by, and breakfast had nice food and a good range of options. The staff were good too, especially the young man at reception.

I booked a room almost a year ahead and paid for it, but the hotel cancelled without telling me. This seems like the same overbooking problem other reviewers have described, with the hotel expecting people to sort out another place themselves. If it happens to you, keep in mind that you are eligible for the hotel to arrange alternative accommodation of at least the same quality, including a ride to the other hotel and coverage of the cost. UPDATE 1: The receptionist told me Booking.com had asked for my booking to be cancelled. Booking.com said it had email communication from the hotel confirming the hotel asked for it. I felt both had lied to me and scammed me. It might even be worth pursuing legal charges against them. UPDATE 2, REPLY TO HOTEL RESPONSE: Thanks for noticing my comment, but a few things in your response don't line up. Your receptionist LIED when they said Booking.com requested the cancellation, when it was actually your hotel. Booking.com has proof of its communication with you about this. That's unprofessional and unethical, and close to criminal because you lied to the customer. I booked many months in advance, then the hotel OVERBOOKED and cancelled MY reservation. I know mine was at a lower rate than later bookings, so it looks like part of your "strategy." Maybe the overbooking was an "accident," though with modern booking systems that is hard to believe. It was my reservation that got cancelled, and there must have been some reason for that choice. Booking.com staff were the ones who took an interest and helped me find somewhere else, covering the extra costs. Your staff never contacted me on their own or helped, apart from the lies in point 1. You say you appreciate me raising this and that you're transparent, but in my case your actions only met the legal minimum you were obliged to. You did nothing to resolve the issue YOU caused in a responsible or satisfying way. All in all, you are either completely unprofessional or professionally unethical. I've had stays elsewhere where some things didn't go as planned, but staff still made an effort. I really don't wish you much luck in your future attempts to disappoint your guests.
