InterContinental Vienna by IHG

We celebrated New Year’s 2025 here, and really enjoyed the hotel’s spot right by the Metro Station. There are also lots of good restaurants within walking distance. The public spaces are nicely decorated, the staff are friendly, and the rooms are comfortable and well kept. It’s a very good older hotel. Breakfast was outstanding too, with a great range of food and drinks. We’ve stayed at InterContinentals in several countries, and those experiences have been unforgettable.

The view from our 11th-floor room looked over the ice rink and the city. After snow fell all night, sunshine came through the windows and the whole scene felt like a winter wonderland. The room itself was comfortable, with clean, soft linen and beds. The hotel has an unpretentious, old-world luxury feel from the 60s and 70s. Service was quiet, polite and kind, and an underground station is only a minute away. One receptionist kindly let us check in early. Later, the breakfast team noticed I admired a pretty bouquet one of them had made and brought to work, then surprised me by putting the same flowers in my room. That sort of attention is hard to find. It felt like a real home from home, and I’d definitely recommend staying here.

The atmosphere and service left me deeply disappointed, despite how beautiful the hotel is. I personally overheard higher management raising their voices at staff behind the scenes, then immediately acting overly sweet with guests. It felt artificial and made the place uncomfortable. Luxury should include respect and authenticity, and here that energy overshadowed the setting. I also found the repeated calls asking about my stay intrusive. I’ve stayed several times recently, and a five-star hotel should know the difference between care and too much contact. As a German-speaking guest booking a luxury suite, I would have expected German service if I wanted it, but communication seemed unnecessarily limited to English, which surprised me given the location. The suite design and interior were genuinely beautiful, and the luxury suite was impressive and well maintained. Aesthetically, the hotel meets five-star expectations. Still, I’ll choose another hotel on future trips to Vienna.

We had a lovely, spacious room with an amazing view. The hotel was conveniently close to a park and train station. Staff were pleasant, and even remembered us when we came back for another stay.
