Hotel Palais Mailberger Hof

Breakfast was à la carte, delicious, and had great quality and variety. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, a nice place to relax after a day of sightseeing. At Palais Mailberger Hof, the receptionist was extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful, making a great first impression. It was a very pleasant stay with excellent service, and I’d definitely recommend the hotel.

The problem wasn’t the scam messages themselves. It was the hotel’s rigid, defensive, and customer-unfriendly response, and that’s why I cancelled my reservation. I rarely write negative reviews, but this should be documented. I booked Hotel Palais Mailberger Hof through Booking.com and, before the stay, got two separate scam messages on WhatsApp with my full name, stay dates, and booking details. I recognized them as fraudulent straight away, but an elderly or less experienced guest could easily have been scammed. The hotel acknowledged the issue but repeatedly said it was “not their responsibility” and blamed Booking.com. They offered no goodwill gesture at all, not even something small like breakfast or spa access. I didn’t expect that from a hotel in the upper segment. It was also never made clear ahead of time that the rooms we booked were attic rooms, which added to the frustration. I understand legal responsibility can be complicated, but good hospitality means standing with the guest when there’s a real problem. Other high-end hotels I’ve stayed at around the world handled similar situations with much more care and professionalism.

My wife and I came to Vienna and found a great mix of historic charm and modern comfort. The rooms were quiet and had high ceilings, though I think the high ceilings may only be on the 1st floor. The central location was ideal, and breakfast was fantastic, with external guests coming in for it too. The staff were exceptionally attentive. I especially want to mention Hotel Manager Mr. Rudrof, who did an excellent job making our stay special. Highly recommended for a sophisticated stay in Vienna.

I’ve visited Vienna often, so I was really excited to book this newly renovated hotel. Instead, it was the worst accommodation I’ve had in Vienna in 20 years. Check-in went smoothly, and I got room keys with my name on them for the 3rd floor. They didn’t work, so the man helping with my luggage opened the door and found people inside. He called reception, and staff explained that room had been given to other guests. Apparently I’d been assigned their room on the 1st floor, in the far corner of the building. The layout was ridiculous, with a windy corridor and a bathroom that wasn’t suitable for normal use. The bathroom door was almost as wide as the gap between its two walls, so you had to figure out how to get in and out. I was travelling with my elderly mother, and the room wasn’t suitable for her. When I explained this to the blonde woman at reception, she was defensive and arrogant. They had no other solution, so I was stuck in a very basic, inconvenient room that was very expensive. They discussed possibly finding a solution the next day, but nobody got back to me, not even to say it wasn’t possible. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, I felt insulted when they offered one free breakfast. I was speechless!
