Melia Vienna

The location is great, close to the center of Vienna, and the view was nice. The stay was pleasant, and I wouldn’t say it’s a bad hotel. I’ve stayed at some five-star hotels, and this felt more like four stars. I hope it improves before we decide to visit again. When we arrived, there was dental floss in the bin, no bathrobes or slippers, and the bathroom door wouldn’t close. The gym was disappointing too, very small and with only a small water machine. I’d prefer bottled water. Breakfast was quite nice and the sausages were really good! But if you love coffee, this may not be the place for you. I’m a coffee person and really didn’t like it. There also wasn’t soy or oat milk, and there was no oatmeal, just yoghurt and oats.

The staff were helpful throughout, and sometimes went out of their way to make things easier. The room was another matter. Our Premium room felt old and worn, the blinds didn't work, and the chairs were uncomfortable. The mattress was so hard we had to arrange for a topper, and the room clearly needs renovation. Some basics were missing too: toiletries, slippers and bathrobes aren't included in every room, and there was no iron or ironing board. The Skybar had plenty of spirits and cocktails, but just one red and one white wine, so it's not much of an option if you mainly drink wine. Also, the restaurant closes on Mondays, and it's best to reserve ahead or you may miss out.

The newly renovated room was spotless and modern, with everything working properly. We stayed one night, chose the fifth floor after hearing the higher rooms available then didn't have good views, and ended up with a very nice one. Check-in was easy since I'd prepaid online, and the front desk staff member was friendly and answered all my questions. We used the public garage and paid there directly so we could come and go. The fitness room was small, but had the equipment I needed, plus water, towels and apples. We'd happily stay here again.

We'd already enjoyed a very good lunch at this hotel, and came back for breakfast today for Valentine's Day. The buffet was varied and high quality, with what I think is the best view in Vienna. Service was friendly and attentive throughout, especially from a woman of Greek origin whose name I unfortunately didn't catch. The price felt reasonable for what you get. We'll definitely return with friends.
