The capsule setup gave me more privacy than a regular dorm, and the place was clean, with well-kept bathrooms and showers. AC helped make the stay comfortable, and the location was really handy for getting around Vienna. When I stayed, Space Home Hostel Prater was a steal at about 17-20 euros a night. They’ve raised the prices since, but I can see why, since the beds could fit two or even three people if you really wanted. It’s not a social hostel, so don’t expect to meet people. The pods aren’t soundproof and you’ll sometimes hear other guests. Budget backpackers can bring earplugs, but be prepared. There’s no kitchen, the towels are small, and check-in is by email with codes, with no front desk, so have the information ready. Trying the capsule style was fun, and the whole experience was great, so I’d still recommend it. I shared a video of my stay on Instagram @notsorichrico. If you have questions, feel free to message me. I like helping people while they travel.

For two people, the storage setup is ridiculous. Our locker was the same size as one for a single capsule, we couldn’t leave anything outside the capsule, and during the day nothing could be left inside either apart from what fit in the tiny safe. Double capsules should have twice the locker space. It made everything needlessly complicated. Noise was a major problem. We expected some noise in a youth hostel, but everyone sleeps in one big room and the capsules do nothing to contain sound. You hear footsteps, every sliding door, and the shared bathroom, and it all wakes you up. There’s no soundproof door between the bathroom and sleeping area either. For just a few euros more, you can sleep properly at another hostel. Clear, large signs about keeping quiet after 10 p.m. would help, since the current rule is printed so small nobody notices. Motion-sensor lights would help too, because the lights stay on all night when nobody switches them off. The place is very clean, with spotless, functional and comfortable common areas. It’s well connected by public transport, near the Prater, and in a quiet neighbourhood. The capsules are fun and reasonably well equipped with USB plugs, ventilation settings, a TV, and other features. I know the price is affordable, but when we arrived, the TV, fans, and blue ambient light in our capsule weren’t working. A simple check beforehand would have caught it. After we messaged reception several times, a technician came the next day and fixed the TV and fan, but not the blue light. These are basic things that shouldn’t cost much to put right. I hope this helps the hotel and future travellers.

I booked two days ahead and got a confirmation. On the morning of my stay, they emailed the address and check-in instructions, then cancelled just a few hours before check-in, saying they were overbooked. I was left stranded in Vienna on New Year’s Eve with no warning. They were unhelpful about finding a solution and didn’t apologize. They couldn’t even admit it was their fault.

We were robbed during our stay here. At first, a few small things went missing and we didn’t think much of it. Then someone tried to use my husband’s card details, and someone had gone through his wallet and taken all his cash. Clearly someone had access to our belongings. There’s practically no security. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place at any cost.

The pods and shared areas were clean, and the easy self check-in and check-out made things simple. You can leave your bags in the lockers for a while after checkout, and they even provide earplugs, though I only use wax ones. I liked the location. There were only two other people in what I think was a 10-pod room, so it stayed quiet. I hadn't realized there was no kitchenette or fridge, or anyone on site to answer questions, but I still had a nice stay.
