When our car broke down in Kolsass, we had to carry on with our holiday by public transport. The patron kindly let us leave some luggage there, even though we weren't staying overnight. That was real Tiroler hospitality. If I need somewhere to stay in the area, I'll book at the Edelweiss.

The room was spacious and clean, the landlady was lovely, and the guesthouse was cheap. Just avoid a room facing the main road. It was noisy, and with no fan or air conditioning we had to leave the window open, so it got far too hot and loud.

The pizzeria across the street serves fresh pizza with thin dough. There isn't a dining area here, so for other meals you'll need to go to nearby hotels and pay for food there. The bed was much too hard for me and left my back hurting. There are only stairs, no elevator. If the landlady has left before you arrive, she'll leave your key in a paper bag taped to the front door with your name on it. When the house is full, parking right in front is hard to find, but there's extra parking a little farther away. Fine for a night or two.

I was here on my own for my first ski holiday back in 1991. If you're under 40, the Edelweiss is a good place to stay. The rooms have showers and balconies, and the place is warm and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner are served across the road at Alpenhotel Rettenberg. Don't miss the gift shop downstairs, it always smells wonderfully of fresh coffee.
