Rübezahl Hütte

We didn’t feel welcome at all. We arrived at 4, an hour before closing, and couldn’t find a waiter, so I went looking for one to order. He seemed annoyed and told me he’d take our order at the table and that I should wait. When I asked what the cake was, he called it “pram cake.” I’d never heard of a fruit called pram, so I asked what it meant. He just said, “pram is in English and that’s the name, so…?” Maybe he meant a different fruit, but he could have explained instead of answering like that. We ordered it to find out. It was 28 degrees, and the umbrella shading us was closed without a word, even though we had chosen that table for the shade. Other guests still had their umbrellas open, and there was an hour left before closing. We also waited a long time to pay while he stayed inside, despite people waiting by the door. When he finally came out, he told us card payments had to be made on the other side, but there were no signs explaining the payment options. There are other terraces nearby, so I wouldn’t come back.

We popped in for coffee and lunch and found it lovely and quaint, with very good food and service. The weather wasn’t great, but on a clear day the views from the outdoor terrace must be fabulous. I can’t comment on the rooms since we didn’t stay overnight.

The Kaiserschmarn are the best around here, and the rest of the food is excellent too. It’s a very friendly place, with some staff speaking Dutch as well as the Austrian version of German. The view is lovely, and it’s a great stop for lunch or a snack. Maybe the best hut at Markbachjoch.

It used to be a really nice place, but since the change of owners it’s gone downhill. We stopped in for a drink today, and a woman kept looking at her phone and ignored us. The waiter was rude and very unfriendly. No wonder the locals don’t come here.
