The Richmond Hotel - Adelaide

The room was huge for such a central spot, and the price was excellent for what you get. Check-in and check-out after hours were super easy, and the location right in Rundle Mall is prime, with a car park included a short walk away. There was long black hair throughout the apartment, which was disappointing. The room also felt old and worn, and the air conditioning was loud all night without cooling it particularly well. Still, the location, prompt and professional service, spacious room and value earn five stars from me. I’d stay again.

The fried chicken and crispy Cajun fries were both excellent, and the cocktails were great too. We ate on the balcony in the afternoon sun, looking out over the mall. Highly recommend stopping here for a meal if you’re visiting the mall.

The air conditioning was awful, and it was cooler outside than in. Patrons were complaining, but staff just offered a complimentary drink in a patronising way. I’d have preferred them to lower the air con temperature. One staff member also seemed more interested in her phone than serving a thirsty customer. I waited close to a minute before she looked up, even though she clearly knew I was there. The place is like a dungeon, so go for it if dark rooms and decor are your thing. Access is appalling too: one entrance was completely blocked, and seemed to have been for some time.

Service was horrible. Over five nights, my room was made up only once, despite putting out the make my room sign every day. Even then, the bathroom wasn’t properly cleaned and the bed wasn’t made. Reception staff were very nice and helpful, but they only open during the daytime, when you normally wouldn’t be in the hotel. They close in the morning and evening. The location is hands down the best in Adelaide, right in the main CBD area. Cleanliness wasn’t the best, though it wasn’t too bad.
