Tanswells Commercial Hote

We only tried dessert, though there seems to be a decent sized food menu. The crème brûlée was tasty and generously portioned, even if it wasn't the best I've had and the caramelised top was a little too burnt. Tanswell Commercial Hotel had a relaxed, welcoming feel, and the staff were friendly, attentive, and accommodating without making a fuss. A pleasant spot to spend some time.

My wife’s steak was okay, though the side portion felt small for the price. I had fish and chips, which were poor value too: a small serving, very dry, overcooked chips you could snap, and fish with hardly any flavour. The menu itself had very few choices and didn't say what kind of fish it was. The room felt cold and was very noisy. We eat out often, but based on this visit I couldn't recommend the place.

The pub has comfy places to sit, so you don't have to spend all your time in the room. It's a good budget stay in Beechworth, with the town's attractions within walking distance, including those on the outskirts if you're up for a longer walk. The room was comfortable except during the really hot days. Once the sun went down, it cooled off; putting the fan by the window brought the cooler air in.

After dinner we watched the locals play at the community band session, jamswellls, which was a fun way to finish the night. We had a great dinner at the Tanswell too. The staff were lovely, especially the young woman who took our booking and looked after us in the dining room. My veggie lasagne was a huge serving, more than I could finish, and my husband had steak. We shared apple crumble made to order, and it was delicious.
