The quiet Bush setting and the view over the dam made this feel like a little getaway, almost like having our own Orient Express. I’ve stayed twice, and the accommodation has been lovely and very comfortable both times. The hosts leave a generous continental breakfast and give you plenty of peace and quiet. It’s reasonably priced and only a short drive from Daylesford. I’d recommend it for a couples’ weekend away from it all.

We barely heard anything beyond the sounds of nature, and the carriage stayed warm and cosy through a cold, wet, windy weekend. The Swiss Mountain Hotel, about 1.5km from the “end of the line,” has a good range of tasty dishes and an inviting open fire. The old “red rattler” has been renovated and furnished with real care and taste. Many fittings are original, and there’s clearly been thought put into making the spacious carriage a high-quality self-contained unit. What a great idea.

We stayed in the governor's carriage, which had loads of space, a large bathroom, and a huge freestanding crawl bath. Thanks to the lovely hosts Kim and gary for a great stay and an amazing breakfast.
