Mercure Canberra

Staff were generally efficient, though not especially friendly. The building has a lot of character, but it risks looking shabby and dated if these small problems aren’t dealt with. There was peeling paint by the bathroom entrance, and the toilet seat wouldn’t stay up until I adjusted it myself. The place is dated and the rooms need attention. I’d like to return and see Mercure brought up to standard while keeping its distinctive character. These little fixes could make a stay much more comfortable.

The beds were comfortable and breakfast was excellent. It was quiet overall, which made for a good night’s sleep, apart from the noisy air conditioning. The a/c also wasn’t strong enough to keep the room comfortable for sleeping. I’m pleased the hotel provides work opportunities for young adults with special needs. For such a big premium hotel, it’s surprising there’s no pool.

The breakfast buffet was outstanding. The hash browns were crispy instead of the soggy, inedible ones you often get elsewhere, and the smoky bacon was cooked perfectly. The sausages were tasty too. Lunch at the bistro was a different story. The chicken burgers were very average, with dry chicken and bread that seemed almost stale. That’s why I didn’t give five stars. The hotel is dated and tired, but very clean and comfortable, and good value since a more modern place would cost much more. It’s just over 1 km from the city centre, and we found free street parking nearby. I’d definitely stay again, but skip the bistro.

We had a spacious king room and found the staff really friendly and helpful. There’s a pub with a bistro on the grounds, and the location was great. The hotel is nearly 100 years old, but it has modern amenities while keeping its heritage look. We loved our stay and will be back!
