The large house was clean and homely when we arrived, and its location suited our group of 10 very well. After a full day driving, though, arriving to a cold house in winter was disappointing. There was good storage except in the bedroom with the single beds. For a five-day stay with 10 people, the supplies felt far too limited: just two toilet rolls, one bath mat in the main bathroom for eight people, no tissues and not enough dishwasher powder. The firewood was very green and made a lot of smoke. That may be why the fire wasn’t lit when we got there. We have a fire at home and tried chopping the wood smaller, but still couldn’t keep the slow combustion fire going after several attempts. We ended up buying more wood and firelighters, and couldn’t use the fire for the rest of the trip. Maybe the chimney was blocked. The BBQ gas ran out within five minutes of cooking breakfast, and I’d seen another review mention the same problem. Checking it before a week-long booking, or leaving a spare cylinder, might help. The double beds were very small for two adults, and the main bedroom lamp had a blown globe with no replacement. These are simple things, but together they kept this from being a five-star stay.
