Please protect this place and look after its history. I’d love to see the hotel refurbished and made wonderful again. Keep the lift the same, please. History matters.

The only good things were the location and the bar below the hostel. The rest felt like a scam. The photos don’t look much like the actual place, and the rooftop has been inaccessible for a long time because of renovations, which wasn’t mentioned. Our room for four was ridiculously small, supposedly for extra comfort, and there was no space for luggage. We had to squeeze past each other. There’s a hole above every bedroom door, so you hear everything. The rooms are dirty and never cleaned. The only daily service is emptying the room bins. The bathrooms aren’t great either: none of the showers work properly, and the taps don’t work properly. The kitchen is too small for the number of guests, and we were always getting in each other’s way. Not all the hotplates work, and I think some of the fridges where we stored food may be broken too. The hostel is badly maintained. A broken toilet caused a major water leak, and we had to evacuate one morning. Then we spent a whole day without electricity, washing in the dark and having a meal that evening in the dark too. Don’t expect compensation. The hostel also won’t refund you if you want to leave early, unlike the vast majority in Australia.

The location is perfect, and the people are super nice. The rooms are a bit outdated, the smell wasn’t good, though I think it was the people in the room who smelled bad, and the beds aren’t the best. An eight-bed dorm had only six lockers, which wasn’t great for the new guy. On the plus side, the showers were clean and warm, the bar downstairs was a lot of fun, and there was a free drink. The hostel also has free dinner nights!

Check-in was smooth and efficient, and the app is a great addition. There’s cheap beer in the bar downstairs. For the same price, I’ve stayed in hostels that were much less nice and had far fewer facilities. It isn’t five-star hotel cleanliness, but you get what you pay for. The only downside for me was that guests can be loud at night, lots of young party people. If that’s your vibe or it doesn’t bother you, I’d recommend staying here.
