The room itself was fine, but I’d pick another hotel. The pool was closed, and the coffee pot in the room had what looked like mold. Staff argued that it was calcification and just how Brisbane’s water is. I’m pretty sure I can tell the difference. The advertised amenities didn’t match what we got: there was no weekend shuttle, something hidden when booking on a phone, and the cafe wasn’t operating. Breakfast wasn’t included because staff said people had complained, so they stopped offering it. The place felt like it charged for everything, with signs everywhere, and the second night cost $8 more for no explanation. When we asked to stay a little longer before our flight, staff offered two extra hours for $25, with a warning that going even a minute past 12 would mean another night’s charge. We declined, but they insisted they’d already charged us, and it took 20 minutes of arguing to get the $25 refunded. Other hotels deliver what they advertise.

The pool was great, especially the little sauna area, which helped my lower back pain. The receptionist was friendly, chatty, and helpful, even while sitting in intense heat because the air conditioning wasn’t working well. My room had been cleaned quite well, but the floor cleaner’s strong essential-oil-like scent lingered so much it was hard to focus or fall asleep. The air conditioner felt more like a fan, only went down to 18 degrees, and only ran while the key card was in the wall. After going out, I came back to an extremely hot room. At $191.00 NZD, I expected more, since another $40 could get an amazing hotel in the city centre. It’s a 13-minute drive to Brisbane airport, so the Uber trip is short and sweet.

The quiet location and comfy bed were the good parts. The rest was old and grotty. When we arrived, the floor was soaking wet, like an ice skating rink, and I was afraid of falling. My husband called reception but got no answer, so we dried it ourselves with a thin, old bathroom towel. There was a fridge-freezer and microwave with basic tea and coffee, but no kitchen sink, tea towel, or dishcloth. The cups and plates were on the bench, and the cupboards underneath were empty and dirty. Watch out for the ‘courtesy shuttle’ to the airport: it doesn’t run on weekends or public holidays, or before 6:15 am on weekdays. We had to pay extra for an Uber because our international flight meant leaving at 5:30 am. We booked because it was cheap, but the extra Uber cost ended up making it more expensive. I’d never stay again.

I had a nice stay at Novena. The room was spacious, clean, and had everything I needed for a comfortable airport layover. The receptionist was lovely and very professional, which made me feel welcome. Thanks, and see you next time I’m in Brisbane.

Christine was wonderful. We needed to stay an extra night in Brisbane, and had a really clean, comfortable room. Loved having dishes and being able to order food to the room, then just relax, watch TV, and chill out. Slept great in that very comfortable bed. Thanks, see you again!
