Chill Backpackers

We booked Chill Backpackers for five nights with a friend because the reviews looked great, and it was our first backpacking trip. Black mold was coming from the vents in our room, and my friend and I both got extremely sick. After being diagnosed with black mold poisoning, we spent over $100 on medication. The staff weren’t friendly. One said, “don’t ask me any questions I am useless.” The kitchen was often dirty and smelled horrible. We stayed in several other hostels as we travelled down the coast, and this one was a real disappointment. It was also on the pricey side. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

I arrived at Chill Backpackers after travelling SE Asia, looking for work and trying to get organised. It was incredibly convenient to have shops, restaurants, banks, libraries and everything else I needed nearby. The hostel is a short walk from everything in the CBD, so it makes a great base when you’ve just arrived. It felt safe and well-managed, with backpackers and working holiday travellers staying there. It’s not a party hostel, which suited me. The relaxed, welcoming atmosphere made it easy to meet people without the place turning into a party scene. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. A special shout-out to the two English girls on reception, Jaz and Niamh. There’s a kitchen too, which was a huge help for saving money and cooking while I got settled. I’d definitely recommend Chill Backpackers Hostel if you want somewhere clean, friendly and well located to get started in the city.

The manager made a real difference from the moment I arrived, helping guests feel comfortable and looked after. They offered local tips, helped organise transport and checked that everything was going smoothly. It was clear they care about the hostel and the people staying there. The shared spaces were clean and inviting, with room to relax, work or socialise. My room was comfortable and well kept, and the kitchen, bathrooms and other common areas were in good shape. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, genuinely welcoming to travellers, and felt like a home base rather than just a bed for the night. This exceeded my expectations. I’d happily stay again and recommend it to solo travellers, backpackers or anyone looking for a friendly place.

Chill is a quiet, lovely hostel in a great spot in the city. Roma station is just down the road and the city centre a little farther on. I was in Brisbane for a couple of nights to see family before heading north. The room was a bit small, but the AC kept it cool all day. The staff are kind and helpful, and do a great job keeping the kitchen and bathrooms clean. A quick shout-out to the receptionists who answered our many, many questions. Definitely worth staying, short or long term.
